WUSC's National Research Seminar aims to strengthen links between academic research and development practice. Inaugurated by John Ralston Saul in 2003, the National Research Seminar is linked to the theme of this year's International Forum, "Innovation in Sustainable Development". The Seminar provides a tremendous opportunity for new and emerging scholars to present their research to an audience comprised of student leaders, academia, government officials and development practitioners from across Canada and around the world.

Each year, WUSC welcomes expressions of interest from emerging scholars and researchers from a cross-section of disciplines (social sciences and humanities, natural sciences), sectors and regions. This includes Canadians engaged in international issues, southern-based researchers, or new Canadians engaged with issues in their countries of origin. Preference is given to individuals currently enrolled in a PhD program, have recently completed a PhD or are new faculty members at a university or college.

Selection of the presentations

Proposals examine innovative approaches and new ideas that are transforming the way in which sustainable development in the South is perceived and achieved. Presenters challenge the status quo and examine emerging ideas that can and do transform development in the South. Presentations will explore innovations aimed at adapting to new challenges related to rapidly changing social, economic and physical environments. They will also explore emerging innovations in the theme areas addressed above.

Preference is given to presentations focused on countries where WUSC or its partner organizations (Centre for International Studies and Cooperation, Farm Radio International, Canadian International Development Agency) are present and that will inspire and motivate individuals to share knowledge and take action.

Regions/countries include: The Americas – Bolivia, Guatemala, Peru, Haiti, Canada; Africa – Burkina Faso, Botswana, Ghana, Guinea, Mali, Malawi, Niger, Senegal; Asia – Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Nepal, Vietnam; Europe – The Balkans.

The Call for Presentations is now closed. WUSC thanks all candidates who have sent their application and research project.
